The Nameless Suit Salesman

January 12th, 2006 · No Comments

As I first walked in the store he said, “Welcome to XYZ Clothing, can I help you?”

He was nice enough, and seemed to know about suits, but I don’t remember his name. No matter how hard I try I don’t remember his name.

I think it started with a ‘B’ or maybe a ‘J’. Now I will never know. If you sell clothing, try this next time you greet a customer who just walked through the door.

Step 1 – Pull a business card out of your pocket.
Step 2 – Introduce yourself.
Step 3 – Ask me for my name.

Here is how it looks in one sentence, “Hello, my name is Brandon, and you are…?

After you say “Hello” put the business card out so the customer can grab it.

Make sure you hold the business card so that the front is facing towards them and can be read. You want the customer to read your name as you are saying it.

This is a really great line for the meet and greet. It forces rapport onto the customer because you ask them an open ended question.

If the person doesn’t respond to your question about their name, press them until you get a name out of them. If they won’t give you their name, they won’t give you their money.
