When we think of product packaging we think of what is on the box, the style, color, shape and size.
We know through many tests that the product package makes a huge difference in what people buy when sitting next to similar products.
What we don’t often think about is the style of product desing as a selling point.
Most companies regard the design of the actual product secondary to the features and price.
Keep this in mind, most people who don’t own the product, never see the box.
Here is an example. Bob bought a new iPod because the box was more appealing than the similar and less expensive iRiver music player and the Dell music player.
Bob now shows his brand new iPod to John who thinks the black face and chrome back are “Sweet!”
John goes to the store and doesn’t even look at the iRiver or Dell music players. He knows what he wants because he liked the design of the item, regardless of the exterior packaging.
The example is a little infantile, but it gets the point across.
Next time you are designing a product and need ideas for packaging, try a clear package and let the beauty of your design show through.
