My Car Sales Unique Selling Position (USP)

January 12th, 2006 · No Comments

A Unique Selling Position (or Point) (USP) is what sets you apart from the competition. This is especially important if you are selling the same product as the guy down the street.

For a long time I sold cars for a living, and here was my USP. I would tell my customers this:

“You may be able to get the same car in the same color with the same options maybe even at the same price from the guy down the street, but here is the difference. When you need someone to count on, or when something goes wrong, or when you are ready for another new car, I will be here. That guy down the street won’t be around when you need him, but I will be here for you no matter what happens.”

Talk about hook, line, and sinker. Who could refuse that offer?

First of all, I admitted that the cars were the same and the price would be comparable. That tells the customer that they don’t need to shop because everything will be the same elsewhere.

Then I give them a reason to buy from me, a Unique Selling Position.

On my business cards I had written, “I’ll be here when you need me.” Everyone I met know that it was sincere.

I then made good on my word every time one of my customers needed me. They would even bring my business cards back to me and say, “I need you.”

That is how you maximize a USP and create customer loyalty all in one shot.
