As a Pet Store owner or sales person, you know how difficult it can be to excite parents to come into your store. However, their children are easily excitable.
Kids love to see animals, especially animals that they have a chance to take home and play with. Kids like kittens, puppies, lizards, snakes, fish, etc.
Parents don’t always like the idea of having another animal at home.
So how do we overcome this obstacle of kids vs. parents?
Sell the kids. How do you do this? Free stuff.
One pet store local to me had wooden nickels made that said “Good for One Free Goldfish at XYZ Pet Store.”
This pet store owner handed these out to kids for playing games at the county fair, when he would take an animal to a classroom, and sometimes when kids came into his store.
The goldfish wasn’t a fancy goldfish, but a medium size (2-3″) feeder fish. Cost: less than a nickel. Total price paid by parents? Average of about $20.
If you have a fish, you need a bowl. If you have a fish you need food. Possibly a filter, possibly a friend for the fish (bigger bowl needed).
You can see how easily the up-sell is in this situation. All because you were nice enough to give a child a free goldfish.
Try it, print “Good for One Free Goldfish” on the back of your business cards and give them to kids next time you are in a classroom, at a trade show, at the fair, or at your own kids baseball game.
