Offer your customers a riddle in which the animal is a pet that either you sell currently, or that you have sold in the past.

The first customer who gets it right gets that pet with a complete setup, or store credit for the same amount.

This is good for you because the markup in the items will help offset the marketing stunt, and they will need to come back for food and supplies which will create additional income in the future.

If you were completely devoted to trying this, you could call local TV stations, newspaper reporters, radio stations, and send out flyers to your current customers.

Have the guessing day on a Saturday beginning at 12:00 noon so you can capture as many people as possible.

Make sure you are fully staffed to keep an eye on theft and regular customers who aren’t in your store for the hype.
